Singapore’s homegrown logistics & supply chain management giant, YCH Group, celebrated its golden jubilee at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia on 7th October 2005 by launching a new branding programme. This includes the unveiling of an enhanced logo and new tagline. As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the YCH Group raised S$150,000 through a fund raising drive for the Community Chest in aid of educational programmes for the needy as well as topping up of the YCH Endowment Fund to the National University of Singapore to S$500,000.
YCH believes in nurturing and inspiring future generations through education empowerment. Therefore, the theme for the philanthropy drive is "Education: Key to Going Where You Want To BeTM". As the Chinese proverb goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". Scholarships will be generated from the YCH Endowment Fund to encourage students majoring in Logistics/Supply Chain Management studies to develop and examine innovative supply chain strategies, helping them in research and studies that will potentially benefit the industry and profession.

The cheques were presented to Mr Edmund Tie, Vice Chairman of Community Chest and Professor Shih Choon Fong, President of NUS. The cheque presentations were witnessed by the Guest-of-Honour, His Excellency, President S R Nathan. Present at the gala dinner were also Mrs Nathan, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister of Education and Mrs Tharman. Other dignitaries present were the secretary-general of the Tianjin Municipal Party Committee of the Tianjin Government, Mr Gou Li Jun, ambassadors of Mexico, Vietnam, Myanmar and CEOs of major MNCs.
Evolution of YCH Group
With humble beginnings as Yap Chwee Hock Transport in the small passenger transport business in 1955, YCH progressed into a leading homegrown regional logistics service provider in the 1980s. One of the key factors for YCH’s success is its continuous strive to drive up the value-chain by creating value through education, training, R&D and innovation. In this regard, YCH has constantly been developing innovative solutions with cutting-edge technology applications for its clients. This has resulted in the numerous awards the Group has won for innovations in IT and SCM solutions. Mr Yap added, "YCH's competitive strength is in leveraging IT as part of the value-added services we provide to our clients. We have a 100-strong IT team which, I believe, is one of the largest for any Singapore-based logistics provider".
YCH has expanded beyond Singapore with a strong presence in the Asia Pacific region. It currently operates a comprehensive network of sophisticated logistics hub throughout Asia. Today, YCH's global reach spans across Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. Although the Group has an extensive China network with sub-regional hubs in Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xiamen, it is also rapidly strengthening its network throughout China by acquisitions, forming more logistics centres in the second tier cities and organic growth. YCH is also keen to expand into countries like India, Vietnam and the mature markets of Japan and South Korea to offer comprehensive and extensive coverage across Asia.
Mr Yap elaborated, "We have established strong and rapidly expanding networks across the Asia Pacific region. With China as the 'Factory of the World', almost all supply chains today begin in Asia. At YCH, we do not just understand the supply chains of our customers, we know Asia intimately and we make sure that their supply chains work seamlessly. We will go and grow with our clients in places where they want to be".
YCH is also one of the few companies in the industry which can effectively manage e2e supply chain with its own award winning solutions. Mr Yap said, "Our regional network is also invariable different from most of our competitors. We grow in depth into the country and distribute to all points throughout the country. For example, in China, we distribute Ciba goods throughout China, Frisian Flag goods throughout Indonesia, Dell across Singapore and Thailand and Canon throughout Hong Kong".
A New Chapter Begins
The Golden Jubilee Gala Dinner kicks off a new chapter for the YCH Group. The new tagline, "Where Your Supply Chain Connects", better reflects the Group’s activities and direction going forward. YCH will also be moving into its newly renovated headquarters.
